Tropic Spotlight: Saumya Kapoor

Meet Saumya, who joined Tropic as a Sales Development Representative (SDR) in May 2022 and was recently promoted to Account Executive (AE). 👋

She's seen the sales cycle from both sides now. After pushing the business forward with outreach as an SDR, she's bringing the same gritty work ethic and persistent positive attitude to her new role managing accounts. For Saumya, the most valuable lesson she's learned in sales: your mindset can turn failures into opportunities. As she says, "Sales is tough and comes with a lot of rejection...there's no better time to push myself to work harder."

What excites her most in her new role?

I’m excited to learn from an elite team who wants to win, to be part of a team that’s going to take this company to the next level, and to grow my sales career and become better every day. I’m excited to continue to work with people who inspire me, push me to challenge myself, and make coming to work something to look forward to.

Learn more about her favorite moment at Tropic, her love for cooking, sandwich shops, and wine, plus more.

Why did you decide to join Tropic?

The people and the vision. ⭐️ I remember being in the interview process and I immediately knew these were the people I wanted to surround myself with. I read all of David’s (our CEO and co-founder) posts on LinkedIn and immediately believed in the vision he set out for the company. Deciding to join Tropic was truly one of the highlights of my year in 2022 (seriously, it’s even competing with my engagement—haha). 💍

What has been your most memorable moment here?

My most memorable moments at Tropic have been at company trips and sales team meetups. Spending time with my co-workers who quickly became my friends is electric. It’s crazy (in a good way) to me that I’ve had the most insightful, funny, honest conversations with the people at this company. We’re truly one crazy, loving, unique bunch.

One of my favorite trips was our sales team meetup in October 2022. It was during Halloween, so of course we needed to throw an epic Halloween party. Everyone (including team members outside of sales) came together in their best costumes. 🎃

What was your proudest moment as an SDR at Tropic?

The first cold call I ever made unfortunately did not convert into a meeting; however, I had a really strong conversation with my prospect. I knew Tropic would be a great fit for them, so I stayed persistent in my communications. Fast forward 30 emails and 150 calls later (yes you read that correctly). I was able to get in touch with the prospect and convince him that he should take a meeting with us. Three months later, they are now a happy Tropic customer. Seeing my hard work and persistence pay off with them eventually becoming a customer was one of the most fulfilling and refreshing feelings as an SDR.

How have you grown professionally since you joined Tropic last year?

I’ve learned that your career is not a race. Take every moment, project, task very seriously and give it your all. Those are the moments you’re going to learn the most—whether it be from failure or success. Tropic has helped me define my brand. Every day I learn something new, whether it's about the economy, being a part of a start-up, something about myself, and of course the procurement world.

What's a fun fact people would be surprised to know about you?

I have a “no boring meals” rule in my house. Meaning, every dinner and lunch must be something that gets me excited—no matter how busy I am. Cooking allows me to decompress and be creative. Shout out to Half Baked Harvest & Serious Eats for helping me make some of the best meals ever. 🍳

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m an avid traveler (perks of working remote). ⛰️ Any chance I get, I love to visit a new country, city or town and experience their culture, try their food, and see what they have to offer. When I’m at home, I enjoy taking my competitive spirit to the nearest pickle ball court or playing board games with friends and family. Food is one thing that keeps me so happy (cliche, I know) so I love trying new restaurants or a new recipe. I’m a crime show junkie so you’ll find me snuggled up on the couch on the weekends with my blanket watching the newest crime show.

If you could choose 2 celebrities to be your parents, who would they be?

Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds (power couple). Being someone who loves to laugh, I can only imagine how fun it would be to their child. Let’s not forget how great their genes are too.

What are three items you cannot live without?

  • My suitcase: Being someone who is always on the go (whether it's on a vacation, weekend getaway, or visiting family), my Away suitcase has been a lifesaver. Sometimes I feel like I practically live out of that thing.
  • Coravin: I’m working towards becoming a wine connoisseur and the Coravin is a great way for me to try different wines without letting it go bad.
  • Bottle of Honey: I have a BIG sweet tooth and put honey on nearly everything, especially pizza. I have found myself bringing my honey bottle to pizzerias so I can enjoy my slice drenched in honey (try it before you judge).

What’s one thing on your bucket list in life and why?

Opening up my own sandwich shop and winery. I LOVE sandwiches and take pride in making them at home. I always dream about how fun it would be to open up my own little sandwich shop where I can share all my creative recipes with the people around me. To make it even better, I’d love to open my sandwich shop next to a winery (that I also own) so people can enjoy a crisp glass of sauvignon blanc with their sandwich. 🥪🍷

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

  • Live every moment to the fullest and take every opportunity that comes your way. Life is short and sometimes you don’t get second chances. Don’t let your fear or failure be the reason you don’t try something new or hard.
  • Always take a moment to laugh and enjoy what you’re doing.
  • Network. You’ll come across some of the most amazing and fascinating people in your life—take every moment to get to know them, learn from them. People are the biggest resource you’ll have in your career.
